September is National Recovery Month, and this month is the time to celebrate the strides made by those living in recovery, highlight resources for mental health and substance use disorders, and promote the evidence-based recovery practices used to treat these disorders. The theme for this year is “Recovery is For Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.” This is meant to remind individuals in recovery and those who support them that they are not alone in their journey through recovery. Dr. Joel Kuppersmith is a psychologist in Huntington, NY that understands that everyone’s mental health journey is different and strives to help all patients deal with mental illness.

What Is National Recovery Month?

Every year in September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors a national observance known as National Recovery Month. The purpose of this campaign is to increase awareness and knowledge about mental and substance use disorders. This campaign also celebrates those who recover and educates the public about treatment. While this year is the 32nd anniversary of National Recovery Month, this observance hasn’t always gone by this name. Starting in 1989 as Treatment Works! Month, the campaign honored the work professionals did to treat substance use issues like:

  • Alcohol Addiction.
  • Prescription Drug Addiction.
  • Heroin Addiction.

Since 2011, the observance became National Recovery Month to encompass mental health treatment and mental illness awareness and recognize those in recovery from substance abuse or mental disorders. This observance aims to eliminate the stigma and misconceptions surrounding these illnesses.
